zenith8 :: LIA FAIL - LEIPZIG - Unsigned - 2008
Another hidden treasure from Italian neo/apocalytic-folk. Based in Bologna, Lia Fail run along the troubled tracks of a music-genre too often neglected and closed into a ghetto like the littlest matryoshka-doll inside the industrial-gothic area. Leipzig - their new five-songs demo - show, instead, a salutary gust of fresh air, thanks to a perfect amalgam of voices and acoustic instruments, soaked by a melancholic, longing beauty.
They have chosen an impervious, harsh subject - the city of Leipzig and its ruins after the war until a possible rebirth – building a concept-album endowed with a strong expressive power (both, sounds and lyrics) but avoiding whatever prolixity and self-satisfaction, typical of this music.
Between lost echoes of British-folk and some neo-classical flavours, Lia Fail (Irish for Stone of Destiny) are already able - potentially, at least - to create their own unique style, on the inevitable path traced by Tony Wakeford, Sol Invictus or Dead Can Dance and even beyond this.
